From homeownership to organ donation, Mayor Connie Alsobrook connects Conyers residents with resources that matter

CONYERS, GA— Conyers residents are gaining access to information and assistance aimed at helping them navigate some of life’s biggest challenges. Through a series of community events in recent weeks, Mayor Connie Alsobrook has brought local and regional experts together to find residents practical solutions  and connect them with available resources.

On July 25, more than 100 residents attended a Homeownership Workshop hosted by the mayor in partnership with the Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America (NACA).  Held at Cultivation Church in Conyers, the workshop provided attendees with practical information about the homebuying process, including down payment requirements, financial preparation, mortgage qualifications, and common do’s and don’ts for prospective homeowners.

NACA representative Donivian Duncan explained the steps participants can take to begin the application process, including scheduling an initial appointment for homeownership counseling. Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and learn about resources that could help make homeownership more attainable.

“This workshop was about giving our residents knowledge, resources, and confidence,” said Alsobrook. “For many families, homeownership can seem out of reach, but with the right information and support, that dream becomes achievable.”

The homeownership workshop was one of several educational events the mayor hosted in recent weeks.

Also in July, the City of Conyers partnered with Georgia Power for a Keeping Conyers Comfortable: Energy Efficiency and Bill Assistance Workshop at City Hall. Residents received information about ways to reduce energy costs, improve home efficiency, and access available assistance programs. Georgia Power representatives also were available to answer questions and assist eligible residents with applications for programs designed to help lower energy bills.

Most recently, the mayor hosted an organ donation information event, giving residents an opportunity to learn about the importance of organ donation and the many ways individuals can make a difference in the lives of others.

The event addressed common myths and questions surrounding organ donation and highlighted that donation is not limited to becoming a donor after death. Attendees also learned about the benefits and possibilities associated with living donations.

The program became particularly meaningful when attendees shared personal experiences. One City employee learned about the process for contacting the family of the donor who gave them a second chance at life, including the first step of writing a letter to the donor’s family.

Another attendee became emotional while sharing the story of a godson who is in need of a kidney. In response, guest speaker Shannell Finney gave the attendee her book, “Dialysis to Destiny, Finding Strength, and Embracing Healing & Purpose,” creating a personal moment that demonstrated the powerful impact of the conversation.

“These events are about more than simply bringing speakers into a room,” Alsobrook said. “They are about connecting our residents with information, resources and opportunities that can make a real difference in their lives. Sometimes that may mean learning how to become a homeowner, finding help with a utility bill, or simply understanding how you can give someone else the gift of life.”
