STONE MOUNTAIN, GA–Gwinnett County is mourning the loss of Police Officer Pradeep Tamang, who died in the line of duty on Sunday, Feb. 1, while responding to a credit card fraud call at the Holiday Inn Express, 1790 E. Park Place Blvd., Stone Mountain.
Officer Tamang, 25, and Master Police Officer David M. Reed arrived on scene and went to the room of Kevin Andrews, 35, who invited the officers inside. As the officers probed suspected credit card fraud and tried to arrest Andrews on an outstanding warrant, he pulled out a gun and began firing, striking both officers. One officer returned fire, injuring Andrews. Additional officers entered the room. Reed was critically injured, while Officer Tamang was wounded and later died at Northside Hospital, authorities said.
Andrews sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also transported to a hospital, authorities said.
Officer Tamang joined the Gwinnett County Police Department in July 2024 and graduated from the 121st Police Academy in May 2025. He was born in Nepal and moved to Georgia years ago. He was engaged to be married, authorities said.
Reed remains in critical but stable condition, authorities said. Reed joined the Gwinnett County Police Department in September 2015 and graduated from the 94th Police Academy.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is leading the probe into the shooting and will work with the Gwinnett District Attorney’s Office on the case.
Gwinnett County Police Chief JD McClure hailed Tamang and Reed for their bravery.
“These officers are heroes. They go out to the road every day and face uncertainty,” McClure said. “They also understand that at the end of the day, they provide a very valuable service and that is safety.”
Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners Chair Nicole Love Henderson praised the two officers for their service and their sacrifice, as the county navigates “this incredibly difficult time.”
“Our hearts are with the families of Officer Pradeep Tamang and with MPO David Reed, their loved ones and the entire Gwinnett County Police Department during this incredibly difficult time,” said Henderson.
“We honor the service and sacrifice of those who selflessly put themselves in harm’s way to protect our community.
“We are deeply grateful for their continued dedication, and we stand united with our officers, their families and all of you as we navigate this challenging time together.”
