GWINNETT COUNTY, GA– The Hooper-Renwick Themed Library in Lawrenceville will close to the public for several weeks beginning April 14 while repairs are made to underground plumbing at the facility. The library is expected to reopen in early May.
The repairs will be completed under the one-year warranty provided by the contractor at no cost to Gwinnett County. While the building is closed, the contractor also will complete additional warranty-related work.
The closure will not affect the library’s exhibit space and associated artifacts. The Gwinnett County Public Library System’s 2026 Summer Reading Challenge program also will not be impacted by the plumbing work, county officials said.
During the temporary closure, library patrons are encouraged to explore the library’s digital services and visit other nearby branch libraries.
About the historic Hooper-Renwick Themed Library
The Hooper-Renwick Themed Library in Lawrenceville opened on June 16, 2025 through a partnership with Gwinnett County, the City of Lawrenceville and the Hooper-Renwick Legacy Preservation Committee. The beautiful new facility was built on the original site of the Hooper-Renwick School, which served as Gwinnett County’s only Black public school for decades before desegregation.
The new facility, approximately 25,000 square feet, houses the library and immersive exhibits that showcase accomplishments and memorabilia related to the school. The library design incorporates the 1959 addition to the school into the new library and includes a second floor conference room with outdoor rooftop space, an audio/video recording studio, gaming room, two study rooms, Black Studies room, and a permanent enhanced collection.
Some examples of items that have been collected for the museum include pews and stained glass windows from churches that had been located next to Hooper-Renwick, to show the role Black churches played in supporting the school, as well as photographs and books from the school.
