ROCKDALE COUNTY, GA–Vice President Kamala Harris swept Rockdale County, handily beating Former President Donald Trump with 72.93 percent of the vote, unofficial results show. Even with a bevy of third-party and write-in candidates, Harris beat Trump by a larger margin than President Joe Biden did in 2020, when he earned 69.89 percent of the votes.
For Rockdale’s sole Congressional seat, Incumbent Democratic Congressman David Scott of District 13 beat Republican Jonathan Chavez with 74.38 percent of the vote. Scott, who last represented Rockdale in 2005 after Congressional maps were redrawn will represent Rockdale once again. Come Jan 1, Rockdale officially moves from District 4, represented by Congressman Hank Johnson, to District 13.
The only contested local race on the ballot was between Democrat JaNice VanNess and certified write-in candidate Avi Gayden for the County Commission Chairman seat. VanNess ended the night ahead with 38,433 votes; write-in votes will be counted later in the week.
The remaining local races – State Senate District 43; House Districts 91, 92 and 93; Probate Judge; Clerk of Superior Court; Sheriff; Tax Commissioner; Coroner; Chief Magistrate Judge; and Post 1 Commissioner – had no Republican challenger, leaving the Democratic candidates, which included 10 incumbents, without opposition.
Voters were also asked to weigh in on three tax-related measures – two Constitutional Amendments and one Statewide Referendum – during the General Primary Election. HR 1022, which aimed to cap property tax values at the rate of inflation, passed with 57.93 percent. HR 598, which proposed the creation of a tax court failed with 53.41 percent of voters voting no. And HB 808, which increased the tangible personal property tax exemption from $7,500 to $20,000 passed with 55.71 percent of the vote.
Voter turnout was high in Rockdale with 72.35 percent of registered voters participating in the 2024 General Election. Like Harris’ win, voters also turned out in larger numbers than they did four years ago, with 68.60 percent participating in 2020.
