Summer is about to be a wrap. Students in the metro-Atlanta area are preparing to head back to the classrooms next month with some of them starting the 2023-2024 school year on Aug. 1.
Many school districts, however, have scheduled back-to-school events in July to gear up for the big day. The events include free school supplies, health screenings and other resources for families, free food and live entertainment and other activities.
Here’s a look at key back-to-school events that are currently published on web sites for school districts that are in On Common Ground News’ readership areas:
Atlanta Public School District
First Day of School: Aug. 1
Back-to-School Bash
July 22, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Georgia World Congress Center, 285 Andrew Young International Drive, Atlanta. Go to Halls C1, C2, which are located closest to Northside Drive
Back-to-School Bash is Atlanta Public Schools’ flagship event that provides FREE backpacks, school supplies, and resources for APS students and their families.
Pre-registration for the Back-to-School Bash closes July 14. Families are required to register to attend: Atlantapublicschools.us/bash

DeKalb County School District
First Day of School, Aug. 7
A Back-to-School Rally will be held on Saturday, July 22, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., James R. Hallford Stadium, 3789 Memorial College Ave., Clarkston.
There will be free school supplies (while they last), resources for parents, health screenings, testing and vaccinations, live entertainment and a Fun Zone.
Fulton County Public Schools
First Day of School: Aug. 7
First Day Fulton Back-to-School Pep Rally
The First Day Fulton Back-to-School Pep Rally ois a free back-to-school event for Fulton County Schools parents and students to attend on Saturday, July 29, 2023, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will take place at two locations: Banneker High School and North Springs High School.
The First Day Fulton event is open ONLY to families with a student registered in Fulton County Schools. To help get families through the event check-in process as quickly as possible, please be prepared to show any of the following:
· A printout of the most recent report card for your student(s).
· Your Campus Parent mobile app already opened to your household page.
· A confirmation email from FCS that you have submitted a student registration application

RCPS’s Back to School Bash will be held on Saturday, July 22, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Rockdale Career Academy, 1064 Culpepper Drive, Conyers. There will be face painting, Zumba, music, student registration assistance, haircuts, Clothing Closet, wellness visits and immunizations.
Open House
Open House for High Schools, July 26: Grades 10 and 11, 4 p.m.; Grades 9 and 12, 6 p.m.
