DECATUR, GA— The Georgia Professional Standards Commission is proposing to remove the words “diversity” “equity” and “inclusion” (DEI) from the 2023 educator program prep standards. The NAACP DeKalb County branch, however, is opposing the removal. The commission is the certifying board for all Georgia teachers, counselors, and administrators.
“The removal of these words from the 2023 educator program prep standards is a step backward said Lance Hammonds,” NAACP DeKalb President. “This country is built on the concepts of equality and today there is a diverse population that need not be ignored. The NAACP has worked hard over the last 114 years for civil rights.
That work has brought this country from a segregated unequal society to one that has moved toward policies that acknowledge our diverse society. It is important that diversity, equity, and inclusion are part of the learning in this diverse society.”
Hammonds said that some educators say that they are confused by the terms diversity, equity, and inclusion. “You don’t dump a concept because you are confused,” Hammonds said. “You clarify it“The removal of DEI will only add more confusion in the classrooms and create an educational barrier for the community. We do not need to go back to the 1900s in education. Let’s move forward and clarify, not deny our children diversity, equity, and inclusion.”
