DEKALB COUNTY, GA – The NAACP DeKalb County branch will present its 2026 Black History Month program on Feb. 21, 10 a.m., at Rainbow Park Baptist Church, 2941 Columbia Drive, Decatur.
The program, entitled “From Hidden Roots to 100 Years of Discovery – Remembering the History They Hoped We Would Forget,” marks the 100th anniversary Black History Month recognizing and commemorating the work of Carter G. Woodson, known as the founder of Black History Month.
The keynote speaker for the event is Daniel Black, Ph.D, a professor of African Studies at Clark-Atlanta University and frequent contributor to the Karen Hunter Show on XM-Sirius Radio. The nationally recognized author, Black has written seven novels. His first essay collection, Black on Black, won the 2024 “Georgia Author of the Year Award.”
Black will speak on the topic: “Using our black history as a reason to propel our young people past the current climate in America (Jim Crow 2.0).”
Dee Smith, chair of the NAACP DeKalb’s Black History Committee, said Black’s topic is both timely and necessary as communities grapple with how black history is taught and understood.
“Our history is so rich and deep… Dr. Black will continue the efforts of Dr. Woodson by sharing to make our history palatable to our young leaders of the next generation.”
The free program is open to the public. For more information, call 404-241-8006 or email info@naacpDekalb.org..
