NY fugitive arrested in Gwinnett County after gunfire involving multiple agencies

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA—Fugitive Kean Wiggins, 35, wanted for Murder out of the state of New York was captured on Thursday, Sept. 24, after gunfire involving multiple law enforcement agencies assisted on the case.

Wiggins had been on the run for nearly 5 months wanted in connection with the May 6 killing of Shardonay Tyce in Albany, New York. Authorities from the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office and Gwinnett County Police Department assisted the U.S. Marshals in Wiggins’ arrest. 

Wiggins was captured after a standoff at a residence located in the 1900 block of Binnies Way in Buford. Along with Wiggins, an adult female at the residence also was taken into custody and charged with harboring a fugitive. Authorities did not release the woman’s identity.

Multiple gunfire was exchanged as agencies surrounded the house on Thursday to serve Wiggins the arrest warrant, authorities said. 

During the execution of the warrant, Wiggins fired at least one shot at officers on scene, the Ginnett County Police Department said.  No deputies or other agents on scene were struck, authorities said.

Several hours later, law enforcement located Wiggins within the perimeter they had established, Gwinnett County Police said. Wiggins had been struck by gunfire. Once the scene was secured, law enforcement immediately rendered medical aid, and Wiggins was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment, officials said.

Wiggins is in custody. There is no known ongoing threat to the public related to this incident, the Sheriff’s Office said. 

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now investigating the circumstances as is customary for officer-involved shootings. 

“This remains an active and ongoing investigation,” the Sheriff’s Office stated. “The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to ensuring the safety of our community. “
