ATLANTA – State Rep. Angela Moore (D-Stonecrest) will host the second annual “Debutantes of Georgia Day” and Scholarship Program on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., Room 216 of the Georgia State Capitol.
“This is so exciting for me as the young ladies get to see their government at work and meet other legislators and ask questions,” said Rep. Moore. “The Debutantes hail from DeKalb, Rockdale, Henry and Newton County public schools, deemed as ‘The East Side of the A.’ This is a lost tradition that is very needed. This program encourages positive mentorship for women at every level of leadership.”
Each debutante has been tasked with constructing a letter to an elected official on a topic of their choosing, which they will read aloud at the Georgia State Capitol. The debutantes will be recognized by the members of the Georgia General Assembly and enjoy a celebratory luncheon. Rep. Moore will also lead a tour of the Capitol for the debutantes. The goal of the event is to encourage these rising high school juniors and seniors to pursue higher education, academic excellence, personal development and civic involvement.
The “Debutantes of Georgia Day” and Scholarship Program is designed to enhance personal, civic and leadership development through structured educational workshops, promote high academic achievement and provide scholarships towards higher education. Additionally, the program seeks to encourage servant leadership through volunteerism and community service, sponsor high ethical standards, character development, good citizenship and social graces, as well as camaraderie and positive relationships with other young women and to encourage artistic expression and health through dance and movement.
