ATLANTA – State Rep.Billy Mitchell (D-Stone Mountain), chairman of the Georgia House Democratic Caucus, was recently elected by other lawmakers from around the country to serve on the 2022-2023 NCSL Executive Committee at the National Conference of State Legislatures’ (NCSL) 2022 Legislative Summit in Denver. Chairman Mitchell completed a rigorous and highly competitive nomination process on Monday, Aug. 1.
“I am honored to have been selected to serve as a member on the governing body of this highly respected national organization,” said Rep. Mitchell. “All 50 state legislatures and legislative bodies from around the world look to NCSL for their premier research, technical assistance and professional development opportunities. I am looking forward to serving as a voice for Georgia on the executive committee as we foster an environment for policymakers to exchange their ideas on issues that impact our states.”
The NCSL Executive Committee is the governing body of the National Conference of State Legislatures. Comprised of 63 elected members, the Executive Committee drives the organization by supervising and controlling the affairs of the Conference, its committees and publications, as well as deciding the organization’s ultimate positions on public policy. It also implements the policies and supervises the disbursement of its funds.
According to the nomination guidelines, successful candidates for NCSL office should have demonstrated through proven leadership in their own legislature and positions of responsibility in NCSL that they can effectively represent NCSL. The Executive committee meets four times a year to oversee the development and implementation of NCSL policies.
“We are pleased to have Representative Mitchell’s expertise on NCSL’s Executive Committee,” said NCSL President and Idaho Speaker Scott Bedke. “Representative Mitchell’s participation in NCSL over the years has been a key part of the organization’s success.”
NCSL is a bipartisan organization that serves the nation’s 7,383 state lawmakers and more than 30,000 legislative staff. Its mission is to advance the effectiveness, independence and integrity of legislatures and to foster interstate cooperation and facilitate the exchange of information among legislatures. The conference alternates its leadership annually between the two parties and is governed by a 63-member executive committee, which includes both legislators and staff, under the leadership of seven officers.
