Rep. Johnson celebrates $20M EPA grant award for DeKalb schools

DCSD slated for 25 electric school buses under EPA program

STONE MOUNTAIN — Today, Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) – a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee – celebrated the announcement that the DeKalb County School District (DCSD) is being awarded $20 million to purchase 25 all-electric school buses under an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant program.

The program is part of a $1 billion nationwide Clean School Bus Program’s Grants Competition made possible through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, otherwise known as the bipartisan infrastructure law, that Rep. Johnson supported. EPA Administrator Michael Regan made the announcement at Stone Mountain Middle School along with the Congressman, U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock, DeKalb District Teacher of the Year, Kristen Jones, and DeKalb Schools Superintendent Devon Horton.

“I couldn’t be happier and prouder that we’re here today in Georgia’s Fourth District to recognize and celebrate all the progress the Biden Administration is accomplishing – in conjunction with Congress – when it comes to creating a cleaner environment, green economy, and healthier children,” Congressman Johnson said.

The announcement highlights the selection of 67 applicants to receive nearly $1 billion through EPA’s first Clean School Bus Program Grants Competition. The awards, which are made possible through President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, will help selectees purchase over 2,700 clean school buses in 280 school districts serving over 7 million students across 37 states. By accelerating the transition to low- and zero-emission vehicles, these awards will improve air quality for children and their families and advance environmental justice, all while boosting the economy and creating good-paying jobs.
