ATLANTA—With temperatures expected to soar to 100 degrees this weekend in the metro Atlanta area, officials are announcing the opening of cooling shelters to help people beat the heat. They’re providing water to ensure people stay hydrated.
The City of Atlanta will open a cooling center on Saturday, June 15, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sunday, June 16, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. The cooling center will be located at Selena Butler Park and Recreation Center, 98 WM Holmes Borders Drive SE, Atlanta.
Water will be provided to residents while in the cooling center.
Rockdale County officials also are opening cooling centers this weekend.
A cooling center will open on Saturday, June 15, at Johnson Park, 1781 Ebenezer Rd. S.W., Conyers.
On Sunday, June 16, a cooling area will open at Fire Station #8, 1164 Scott St. SE, Conyers. Please note the cooling center at Fire Station #8 will be an outdoor shaded area with misting fans.
“We urge the public to help spread the word for those needing a cool place to drop by and cool down during the upcoming superheated weekend temperatures,” Rockdale County government stated in a news release
The Rockdale County Emergency Management Agency will offer bottled water and air conditioning/misting fans to those who need additional assistance to stay cool.
The cooling centers are designed for people to spend a brief period cooling off. They are not shelters for those who stay long hours.
