State Sen. Emanuel Jones (D – Decatur) released the following statement regarding the potential closure of the South DeKalb campus of Georgia Piedmont Technical College:
“After reading an editorial in the “On Common Ground” newspaper regarding the potential closing of the South DeKalb Georgia Piedmont Technical College Campus, I have serious concerns that require immediate attention.
I am the State Senator who represents the residents and citizens of the South DeKalb community. Our emphasis is to promote economic development and academic excellence in the South DeKalb community. As such, the programmatic offering at this facility which includes: GED, Continuing Education Classes, Technical Education Classes, Adult Education Classes, Dual Enrollment Classes and many others is a great benefit to our community. It is my understanding that the population has increased to well over 650 students. The real impact is that students, parents and businesses are benefiting from the presence of this facility.
These are just a few of the concerns I have regarding the proposal to close the South DeKalb campus. I hope to meet with stakeholders including students, faculty and the community to discuss these questions and others and work towards ensuring that the South DeKalb Campus of Georgia Piedmont Technical College remains open.”

The South DeKalb campus is being moved, not shut down. The current lease costs taxpayers $27,000 a month. For a campus that’s literally a 10-minute bus ride from the main campus, this is hardly money well spent. I think the county can spend our tax money far more wisely, and continue to educate our citizens.
I challenge you, Senator Jones, to help the citizens of DeKalb County by providing funding for a daycare facility for those who are trying to get an education to pull themselves out of poverty, but who cannot afford childcare. Participating in this “Fred Lewis Public Tantrum of Faux Outrage” isn’t helping anyone. Put your time representing those of us who live in DeKalb. Lewis is a denizen of Fulton County, and he stole millions of dollars of our hard-earned tax dollars to fund his self-celebratory speeches. He’s not the side you should be taking here. If you’d like to keep my vote, you may want to keep this in mind. I’m not the only one watching.
