DEKALB COUNTY, GA – The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office reported on Monday, Sept. 22, that another inmate has died while in custody at the DeKalb County Jail. The death is the jail’s seventh inmate death reported this year.
Authorities say that 27-year-old Decatur resident Larynz Redd was found unresponsive in the jail on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025. Immediate emergency medical services were provided by on-site health services and DeKalb EMS, but Redd was pronounced deceased, the Sheriff’s Office stated.
Redd had been in custody since May 2024. The cause of his death is under investigation. Officials say, however, there is no indication of foul play.
“The DeKalb Sheriff’s Office is deeply concerned about the death of any individual in our custody,” said Sheriff Melody M. Maddox. “Their care and safety are our priorities, but no occurrence of this nature is predictable. The circumstances, regardless of what caused a death, are always thoroughly investigated. In addition, our jail operations team is committed to improving conditions at the jail that may help to prevent incidents where possible.”
Earlier this month, the DeKalb Sheriff’s Office stated that an inmate identified as Preston Gabriel Bush, 49, of Doraville, Georgia, died on Sept. 4 after a medical emergency. The jail’s on-site medical team responded and provided emergency care until EMS personnel arrived. Bush was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased, officials said.
Officials said no updates were available concerning two other unrelated in-custody deaths at the DeKalb County Jail reported by the DeKalb Sheriff’s Office on Aug. 26. The identities of the inmates have not been released and no details concerning the deaths have been disclosed as the investigations continue.
