ROCKDALE COUNTY, GA—Rockdale County Public Schools reported that an investigation is underway concerning a fight over the weekend that that took place during the pre-game warmups at the Heritage High School vs. Rockdale County High football game. The Aug. 28 game was cancelled after the altercation occurred on the field.
Rockdale County Public Schools issued the following statement from Superintendent Stephanie Johnson:
“Rockdale County Public Schools is committed to providing safe, positive, and respectful environments for our students, staff, families, and community members. Unfortunately, due to an altercation that occurred on the field during pregame warmups, the decision was made to cancel the August 28th Heritage High School vs. Rockdale County High School football game.
While we recognize the disappointment this decision may cause for our student-athletes, coaches, families, and supporters, the safety and well-being of everyone involved must remain our highest priority. The behavior displayed does not reflect the values of sportsmanship, respect, and integrity that we expect from all participants representing our schools and community.An investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. We are working closely with all parties to gather relevant information and will take the necessary time to review all evidence. Individuals found to have violated district policies, athletic codes of conduct, or expectations for student behavior will be held accountable and subject to appropriate consequences.
Athletics provide an opportunity to develop character, leadership, teamwork, and discipline. We expect all student-athletes, coaches, and spectators to demonstrate good sportsmanship before, during, and after every competition. Acts of aggression, intimidation, or unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated in Rockdale County Public Schools.We appreciate the cooperation of our students, families, and community as we complete this investigation. Our focus remains on ensuring a safe and supportive environment where competition is conducted with respect and where all participants can take pride in representing their schools with honor."
