ROCKDALE COUNTY, GA—A team of Voices of Faith Church leaders were on the ground, joining others on
Thursday in providing meals to those in need, a day after a tornado ripped through Conyers just before midnight. The EF-2 tornado winds reached 115 mph across a 9.5-mile stretch of Conyers, located just east of Atlanta, the National Weather Service reported.
“You can’t look at the news reports and really understand the magnitude of what happened. You’re literally in tears when you see the path of destruction. You can’t help but praise God and give Him thanks because no casualties were reported,” said Angia Levels, who serves as an elder and the executive assistant to Bishop Gary Hawkins,Sr., founder of Voices of Faith.
Levels and two other Voices of Faith ministry leaders—Solina Smith and Althea Brooks—took 100 meals to a fire station command site, where volunteers were working to load up and deliver meals to people who experienced power outages caused by the tornado. Conyers First Methodist Church also provided meals and served as a Red Cross Center for those in need. The efforts were coordinated by Rockdale Emergency Management.
Levels said a family of seven shared how grateful they were to have survived the storm. They hid underneath a staircase inside their home as the tornado hit, uprooting a tree that fell on top of the house. The family was uninjured.
Rockdale Board of Commissioners Chairman Oz Nesbitt was out in the community surveying the damage personally. He and members of the county’s television station gave residents a look at the destruction via R23 TV.
