DEKALB COUNTY, GA—Four men and three women from DeKalb and Rockdale counties were elected on Saturday, April 6, as 4th Congressional District Presidential delegates to the Democratic National Convention.
The seven who were the top vote-getters will join delegates from across Georgia at the Democratic National Convention, which will be held in Chicago Aug. 19-22. In total, there were 22 contenders vying for the opportunity to represent the Fourth Congressional District at the convention.
The delegates elected include:Dee Dawkins-Haigler; Erica A. Slaton; Samuel (Parker) Short; State Rep. Billy Mitchell; and John Storck, all from DeKalb County.
The two Rockdale residents who were elected are Eric Washington and Gia Compton.
Registered voters with the Democratic Party were permitted to participate in the election, which was held at the DeKalb County School District’s Auditorium in unincorporated Stone Mountain.
At the upcoming convention, delegates will caucus for the Democratic nominee for U.S. President. Delegates pay their own way to attend the convention.
The United Center, previously the location of the 1996 Democratic National Convention, will be the 2024 convention’s primary location in Chicago. McCormick Place will host secondary business of the convention.
The DNC is expected to bring an overall 50,000 visitors to the city of Chicago, planners say.
“The DNC convention generates $150 to $200 million into the local economy of the city it’s hosted in, and we expect that to be no different in 2024,” Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said last year.
The Republican National Committee announced that its convention’s dates will be July 15–18, 2024. The event is anticipated to potentially bring 50,000 visitors to Milwaukee. Estimates show that it could bring as much as $200 million in revenue to the region.
