North DeKalb Senior Center opens its doors to DeKalb residents on Thursday, Dec. 1. The facility is located at 3393 Malone Drive in Chamblee.
“This center will serve as a welcoming gathering place where area seniors can learn new skills and participate in exciting activities,” said DeKalb Interim CEO Lee May. “DeKalb’s Senior Services and Facilities Management departments worked together to open a top-notch building that the community can use for years to come.”
North DeKalb Senior Center is the last of three senior centers recently constructed in the county. The center features computer classes, exercise classes and more. The facility has an aerobic exercise room, multipurpose classroom, arts and crafts room, library, billiards room, game lobby, computer classroom, full-service catering kitchen, two outdoor patios and a state-of-the-art audio visual system. The $5.2 million center was completed using federal funds from U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as well as Community Development Block Grants.
“The Community Development department set a vision years ago to fulfill a dream held by many of the ‘Bridge Builder Seniors’ and the late Commissioner Lou Walker,” said Allen Mitchell, director of Community Development. “We are proud of this work and the excitement generated by our DeKalb seniors about their new facilities.”
