DEKALB COUNTY, GA– Jurors returned guilty verdicts against 26-year-old rapper Qamar “Q Money” Williams in connection with the shooting death of Calvin “Scotty” Chappell, 24, DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston announced this week.
Williams was convicted of Malice Murder, Felony Murder (two counts), Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Possession of a Firearm
The fatal shooting occurred on April 15, 2019 at a home in the 3500 block of Lehigh Way in Decatur. Police responded to the scene on a ‘person shot’ call and discovered the victim deceased with several gunshot wounds to his body, including his head, authorities said.
According to the investigation, the victim, Williams, and several other friends went out to a club the night before. The group of friends returned to the home around 5 a.m. the next day. The victim went to bed and Williams went out to eat. When he returned home shortly after 6 a.m., Williams crept up on the victim as he slept on an air mattress in the living room and shot him more than half a dozen times, before fleeing the home.
The incident was captured on home surveillance video. The investigation revealed Williams was aware of the video recording because he tried to shoot and disable the camera before shooting and killing the victim, authorities said. He also called one of his friends later that day asking him to delete the video. The exact motive for the killing remains unknown.
A sentencing hearing before DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Nora Polk, who presided over the case, is currently pending for Williams.
The case, assigned to the District Attorney’s Homicide and Gang Unit, was prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Ellie Friedman with assistance from ADA Reid White and DA Investigator Alyssa Zackery. Detective D. Evans of the DeKalb County Police Department led the initial investigation.
