Congressman Hank Johnson announces STEM scholarship program for high school seniors

Congressman Hank Johnson’s office is inviting interested high school seniors in the Fourth Congressional District to apply for the $40,000 Future of STEM Scholars Initiative Scholarship.

The program is open to graduating high school seniors who plan to attend an Historically Black College or University(HBCU). Applications will close on Jan. 31, 2023.

The Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI) is a scholarship program for students who plan to study STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs.)

The American Chemistry Council has partnered alongside HBCU Week Foundation, American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), and Chemours to make the program possible. In addition to the scholarship, students will gain leadership development, mentoring and internship opportunities with program sponsors and access to AIChE student networking events.

Program FAQs:

• Graduating high school seniors are eligible to apply. Applications for the 2023 cohort opened on Friday, Sept. 23, 2022.
• Each FOSSI scholar is awarded a $40K scholarship ($10K per year, for four years), offered leadership development, mentoring and internship opportunities with program sponsors, and access to AIChE student networking events.
• Since 2021, FOSSI has provided 295 scholarships, with a goal of awarding 1,000 scholarships by 2025.

About FOSSI: With funding from 60 chemical manufacturers and related industry stakeholders, the program has raised more than $17 million to support access to education. This national industry-wide program seeks to increase the number of underrepresented professionals in the STEM workforce, particularly in the fields of chemical manufacturing, engineering, environmental health, and sustainability. Scholarship recipients represent 30states, with students attending 39 HBCUs.
