NAACP DeKalb to present panel discussion on Georgia’s new laws restricting Black History in public schools

DEKALB COUNTY, GA—The NAACP DeKalb County branch, in observance of Black History Month, will host a panel discussion about Georgia’s new laws restricting Black History in public schools. The panel discussion entitled, “Our History is Under Attack—Save Our History!”  will be presented on Saturday, Feb. 4, 10 a.m., at Rainbow Park Baptist Church, 2941 Columbia Drive, Decatur. 

The discussion, which will include legislators, educators, administrators, parents, and students, will focus on Georgia’s new House Bill 1084 and Senate Bill 377, new laws concerning “divisive concepts” in public schools including prohibiting the use of curricula that addresses the topics of slavery, racial oppression,  racial segregation, or racial discrimination. In some cases, teachers have been reprimanded or fired because of the new legislation, the NAACP DeKalb branch stated. 

The civil rights organization is urging the community to attend the panel discussion to learn more about the impact the bills will have on students.
“Our history is deliberately and systematically under attack. Our history is who we are, and we must never forget it,” said Attorney Dee Smith, DeKalb NAACP’s Remembrance Project Chair.
