Williams was charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, kidnapping, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and criminal damage to property in connection with the July 1 incident.
The incident happened around 4:30 a.m. at the restaurant, located at 5075 Stone Mountain Highway, Stone Mountain. Police responded to scene after the victim called 911 to report the robbery attempt. When officers arrived, the victim told them that he was a delivery driver for theChick-fil-A and while he was inside working, the suspect smashed a drive-thru window with a rock and entered the kitchen area. The suspect told the victim that he was going to die if he didn’t open the safe and pointed a handgun at him.
The victim told police that he didn’t know the combination to the safe, so he decided to fight off the armed man. The two men were captured on surveillance video for several minutes fighting over the gun, police said.
During the physical altercation, the victim was able to pull the suspect’s mask off his face. After several minutes of fighting, the suspect fled the location through a rear exit door and was gone when the police arrived.
Investigators assigned to the case immediately began canvassing the area for evidence related to the suspect’s identity. Detectives were eventually able to identify a vehicle they believed the suspect used to get to the location. That vehicle led to the identification of Tommie Lee Williams.
Investigators obtained warrants for Williams and arrested him on July 31 with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals and the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department.
