ROCKDALE COUNTY, GA— A Rockdale County Jail detention deputy and a former employee have been arrested in connection with contraband being smuggled into the jail, according to a statement from the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office.
The arrests were announced in a press release issued on Dec. 17 at 8:26 p.m., though officials did not release the names of the individuals involved. The Sheriff’s Office also did not disclose what specific items were brought into the jail or the potential charges the suspects face.
The detention deputy was arrested on Dec. 13. Authorities say further inquiries uncovered additional involvement, leading to the arrest of a former jail employee on Dec. 16.
Rockdale County Sheriff Eric J. Levett addressed the incident, emphasizing that the Sheriff’s Office is committed to accountability and transparency.
“I am proud of the swift investigation being performed by my team,” said Sheriff Levett. “I want to be clear that all leads will be thoroughly investigated and anyone who is implicated in bringing prohibited items into the Rockdale County Jail will be held accountable and charged according to the state laws of Georgia. I hold every one of my employees at a different level of accountability and there is a level of community trust that is associated with this career. Please know -there is absolutely no exception in any case of misconduct by any employee of the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office that will go unanswered.”
The investigation remains ongoing. More details will be released later, authorities said.
