DEKALB COUNTY, GA –This week, DeKalb County School District (DCSD) students interested in pursuing careers in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics(STEM) are learning about fire and emergency medical services careers at the district’s Fire Science and Public Safety Career Exploration Camp.
The one-week camp, which began on Monday, June 23, runs through Friday, June 27. Campers are participating in activities from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at Stephenson High School through Thursday and will wrap up the camping program on Friday at the DeKalb County Fire Rescue Academy.
The camp allows students to connect what they have learned in their STEM classes with future career pathways, including fire and emergency medical services, crime scene investigation and forensic science, public health, biology, and law enforcement.
Students are getting hands-on training and exploring real-world investigations, while growing their knowledge of how various science concepts are applied to each career
alongside the professionals working in these fields, school officials say.
“Through this camp and the curriculum, we’re building with these partners, we hope to create a Fire and EMS Pathway in our schools starting in 2026,” said Jacqueline Stephens, DCSD K-12 curriculum coordinator. “This pathway would continue to bring Xplorlabs’ resources into the classroom, as well as hands-on training with fire and EMS professionals, eventually allowing students to dual enroll and receive
employment in these fields after high school graduation.”
Stephens said the STEM career pathways and Xplorlabs integration are part of the district’s strategic plan to continue increasing science scores. DCSD first introduced Xplorlabs into four schools in 2024 and plans to nearly double the number of schools using the platform in 2025, Stephens said.
