LAWRENCEVILLE, GA – A Michigan man was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of sexually abusing two girls over the course of seven years and conceiving a child with one.
A Gwinnett County jury found Carlos Leroy Benson, 55, guilty of four counts of rape and four counts of child molestation for multiple incidents between 2012 and 2019.
“You are a vile and reprehensible person,” Superior Court Judge George Hutchinson said as he sentenced Benson. “I think the evidence in this trial fully supports that you are an evil person.”
Benson was ordered to serve two consecutive life sentences plus 20 years in prison followed by 20 years of probation. He must also register for life as a child sex offender.
Benson began grooming both girls at about age 9 years old and touching them inappropriately. It escalated to sexual abuse, and he threatened to kill both of them and their family if they ever told anyone. It continued to him raping the oldest victim days before her 18th birthday, impregnating her, according to investigators.
“These victims displayed true courage for being able to face this defendant in court and call out his wrongdoing,” District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson said. “We pray that these young women have all the support that they need to move beyond the abuse they suffered and thrive.”
Special Victims Unit Assistant District Attorney Dallas Cox and Managing Assistant District Attorney Megan Matteucci prosecuted the case with assistance from SVU Investigator Joseph Boyd and SVU Victim Witness Advocates Rocio Pineda and Esther Askew.
