GWINNETT COUNTY, GA—Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) has named Monica Brown as the 2025-26 School Librarian of the Year. This award honors a K-12 school librarian whose exemplary library program promotes a culture of reading, fosters critical thinking through inquiry and research, and supports learning through collaborative partnerships.
Monica Brown, who works at Five Forks Middle School, is a champion for literacy. Brown encourages a culture of reading through “Book Talks with Mrs. Brown,” monthly contests, and Beanstack reading challenges.
To create an immersive learning environment, Brown uses exhibit-style displays with artifacts, visuals, and interactive elements. These displays celebrate cultures, heritage months, and curriculum connections.
Beyond the school year, Brown promotes summer reading, the GCPS Book Mobile in the community, and cross-curricular initiatives that inspire students to see reading as joyful and connecting to their identities and interests.

Five Forks Middle School Assistant Principal Jennifer Bahr said Brown is a leader.
“She redefines the role of the school library, elevating it from a traditional resource space to a vibrant center for learning, inclusion, innovation, and student growth,” Bahr adds.
Brown collaborates with every department and grade level, delivering more than 90 instructional lessons and book talks this year. Her work supports all learners through tailored instruction, inclusive programming, and experiences that build agency and independence, the district stated in a news release. From research units and technology integration to bilingual read-alouds and hands-on learning, Brown ensures every student has access to rigorous, meaningful learning opportunities.
In addition to her work with students, Brown is a leader within the district. She is a member of the School Librarian Leadership Council and a mentor to new school librarians. Her dedication to continuous improvement through professional learning, community partnerships, program evaluation, and innovative instructional design has strengthened not only Five Forks Middle but also the GCPS library community. Brown exemplifies GCPS excellence through her exceptional contributions, leadership, and commitment to ensuring that all students feel valued, supported, and inspired to learn.
This spring, Brown will compete for the Metro Atlanta Library Media Specialist of the Year title, sponsored by the Georgia Library Media Association.
