LILBURN, GA – The City of Lilburn will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with a 9/11 25th Anniversary Remembrance & Memorial Dedication on Friday, Sept. 11, at Lilburn City Hall.
The ceremony will begin promptly at 8:46 a.m., marking the time American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center 25 years ago.
As part of the remembrance, the City will dedicate a permanent memorial featuring a piece of steel recovered from the World Trade Center. The City obtained the steel in 2012 through the September 11th Families Association and Tribute WTC Visitor Center, with the intention that it would one day be placed on permanent display. Fourteen years later, on the 25th anniversary of the attacks, the artifact will be given a permanent place of honor at Lilburn City Hall.
For one month following the dedication, visitors to City Hall will also experience a special installation of 2,977 origami cranes, representing the lives lost in the Sept. 11 attacks. Each crane bears the name of one of the 2,977 people killed that day, transforming the installation from a representation of the magnitude of the loss into a remembrance of each individual life.
The cranes were hand-folded by Lilburn resident Daniele Roberts, with assistance from family and friends. Suspended above the memorial, the cranes create a powerful visual tribute to those whose lives were lost 25 years ago.
Mayor Johnny Crist and Councilmember Scott Batterton will participate in the dedication ceremony, along with Roberts. The program will include a presentation of colors by the Parkview High School Marine Corps JROTC Color Guard and the formal dedication of the memorial.
The City invites the community, first responders, veterans and all those wishing to commemorate the anniversary to attend and join together in remembrance.
Following the ceremony, the memorial will remain on permanent display at Lilburn City Hall, providing a place for reflection, remembrance, and education for generations to come. The 2,977-crane installation will remain on display for one month.
