DECATUR, GA – City Schools of Decatur Superintendent Gyimah Whitaker and Chief Financial Officer(CFO) Lonita Broome have been named to the Leadership DeKalb Class of 2024. They are among 50 leaders, including CEOs of top public and private companies and DeKalb’s elected officials, educators, judges, entrepreneurs, volunteers and nonprofit leaders. With a focus on the entire county, Leadership DeKalb reflects the area’s rich diversity, positioning current and emerging leaders to unite, commit and act to make DeKalb a premier place to live, work and enjoy life.
Superintendent Whitaker began her tenure as superintendent of the City Schools of Decatur in July. Whitaker has more than two decades of teaching and leadership experience, including serving as deputy chief academic officer for Fulton County Schools, where she supervised the assistant superintendents of Student Support Services and Learning and Teaching. Additionally, she served as an area superintendent and executive director. Her previous experience includes progressive leadership roles in Atlanta Public Schools as an area superintendent and coordinator of Gifted and Talented Services.
Whitaker earned a Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies and a Master of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Pennsylvania. She also has a doctoral degree from Georgia State University in Educational Leadership and Administration.
CFO Broome began her tenure as chief financial officer of the City Schools of Decatur in 2020. She previously served as chief business manager for the City of Atlanta Police Department and has over 16 years of experience in school finances with Clayton and Fulton County schools.
