DECATUR, GA—With travel overseas on the rise, Congressman Hank Johnson, who represents Georgia’s 4th District, is encouraging those planning trips abroad to get passports in hand ahead of booking a trip.
“Passport applications are reaching an all-time high. I want to urge everyone to apply for their passports before booking an international trip. As of now, expedited processing takes seven-to-nine weeks and routine processing takes 10-13 weeks,” Johnson announced in a newsletter to constituents.
International travel is indeed making a comeback as people mark off their “bucket list” trips. As fears over the pandemic have wane and restrictions have been lifted, households are unleashing two to three years of pent-up demands, according to tourism analysts. Hopper cites that 62 percent of 2023 flight searches in the first week of last December were for international travel—up from 55 percent for the same period in 2021.
In 2022, Americans bought travel insurance for international trips at the levels seen in 2019 before the pandemic and the trend continues in 2023, according to Squaremouth, an online travel insurance company.
Johnson said his South DeKalb County district office has been working tirelessly to navigate passport issues for constituents, assisting more than 600 people this year alone.
Passports for adults are valid for 10 years, while those for minors under the age of 16 are valid for 5 years. Key tips: • Check your passport’s expiration date. • Make sure your children — including newborns — have a valid passport. • Book your trip AFTER you receive your passport in hand. • Make sure you plan ahead, so you do not have to scramble at the last minute.
