Diabetes Association of Atlanta partners with New Birth to provide additional food packages during King’s Table distribution on Sept. 26

STONECREST–New Birth Missionary Baptist Church continues to support families in need during its weekly food pantry that feeds 8,000 individuals each week. During the Sept. 26 food distribution, the King’s Table food pantry will receive supplementary food packages from the Diabetes Association of Atlanta(DAA) for 1,000 DeKalb County residents. The free food distribution begins at 10 a.m. and ends at noon. No event registration is necessary.

“This pandemic has created astronomical hardship for people of all walks of life, making it difficult for people who have experienced a loss in income to obtain fresh produce and healthy food options,” said DAA Executive Director Karla Hooper. “This collaborative effort with New Birth allows us to curb food insecurities in DeKalb County, provide healthy eating options for families and provide free resources for anyone who may have diabetes.”

The supplementary food packages provided by DAA consists of additional fresh fruits, vegetables and other healthy food options including salmon, baby spinach, butternut squash, olive oil and more. While this collaborative effort is designed to support DeKalb residents experiencing food insecurities, New Birth’s weekly food distribution is open to all individuals and families in need of free food during these trying times. “New Birth has remained on the frontline of combating this pandemic by providing resources to families in need, COVID-19 testing opportunities and other support,” said Dr. Jamal Harrison Bryant, senior pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. “We are proud to partner with Diabetes Association of Atlanta as we continue to advance our mission to love, live and lead like Christ.”

Funding for this additional effort was provided by the DeKalb County Citizens Assistance Program through DeKalb County Government and is designed to directly support local residents. Additionally, DAA’s partnership with New Birth will help connect the community with direct resources for individuals with diabetes who may have challenges paying for essential medical supplies.

“This health pandemic has also created financial burdens for many individuals with diabetes, making needed medical supplies all but unaffordable,” said Hooper. “We have seen how COVID-19 severely impacts individuals with underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes and other chronic illnesses. At DAA, we want to do everything we can to ensure people with diabetes remain vigilant about their healthcare and are tapping into available resources to offset costs for food and life-saving medical supplies.”
