ATLANTA—The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) announced that the Digital Driver’s License and ID program has achieved a remarkable milestone: 800,000 customers have added a digital driver’s license and/or ID to their smartphone wallet since the program launched in May 2023.
This marks a significant advancement in digital identity verification within the state of Georgia, officials said in a statement on Sept. 21.
“Adding a digital driver’s license to your smartphone wallet offers greater security, convenience, and privacy. It’s a smart, practical step for anyone looking to simplify everyday interactions while keeping their license or ID safer, more accessible, and always within reach,” DDS Commissioner Angelique B. McClendon stated.
Uses for the digital licenses and IDs:
- Accepted at select airports thru the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security checkpoints (https://www.tsa.gov/travel/frequently-asked-questions/when-will-phased-digital-id-rollout-start-which-airportsstates).
- Use at your next Department of Driver Services visit for faster service
- Metro-Atlanta entertainment arenas for age verification when purchasing alcohol
- Apple stores and more
“Currently, the Georgia Digital Driver’s License and ID is optional and is not a substitute for customers’ physical cards. Therefore, DDS reminds customers to continue to always carry their physical driver’s license because it is the law,” McClendon said.
