Gwinnett County DA speaks out on second bond granted to suspect in murder of pregnant 16-year-old girlfriend

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA – A man accused of killing a pregnant 16-year-old was released a second time on bond Friday,(March 28) despite the addition of sexual assault charges and continued demand of the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s office to keep the murder defendant in custody.

Jesus Monroy, 20, was charged by police in July with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, voluntary manslaughter of an unborn child (feticide) and making false statements or writings in connection with the July 15 strangling death of Mia Campos. Campos was seven months pregnant at the time of her death. 

In February, a Gwinnett County grand jury indicted Monroy of the additional charges of enticing a child for indecent purposes, statutory rape, child molestation and two counts of making false statements. Evidence was presented to a new judge on Wednesday that showed Monroy fleeing his home in the family complex in September when police arrived to execute a search warrant. The judge also heard new DNA evidence confirming that Monroy fathered the child Mia Campos was carrying.

“As a result of defendant being granted bond again, even with additional charges, the District Attorney’s Office will continue to fight to bring justice and accountability to the Defendant because of the heinous offense of killing a pregnant teenaged mother, and her child,” Gwinnett District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson said Friday morning. “We do not agree with the granting of bond in such cases as this, but we present the issues to the Court, and the Court, gives her ruling.  We assure the family that the District Attorney’s Office will fight and achieve justice in this case. The defendant has a legal right and is presumed innocent until proven guilty. We will prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.”
