GWINNETT COUNTY, GA—The Gwinnett County Board of Education has announced that Dr. Alexandra Estrella has been named the sole finalist to serve as the next Superintendent of Gwinnett County Public Schools.
Estrella was selected following a national search and rigorous evaluation of a strong pool of candidates, the Board said, stating that she was the most qualified candidate considered who is best prepared to guide Gwinnett County Public Schools.
The Board partnered with Alma Advisory Group, a nationally recognized executive search firm, to lead a transparent process that included surveys, focus groups, student engagement opportunities, and community listening sessions across the county. Thousands of students, families, educators, education support professionals, and community partners shared their perspectives about the qualities they believe are essential for the next superintendent of Gwinnett County Public Schools. Those insights helped shape the leadership profile that guided the Board’s work throughout the search.
Estrella brings more than 26 years of experience as an educator and school system leader. She currently serves as Superintendent of Norwalk Public Schools in Connecticut and previously held leadership roles in the New York City Department of Education, including Superintendent of Community School District Four in East Harlem, where she worked in close partnership with the New York City Schools Chancellor and senior leadership to lead systemwide, transformative initiatives that strengthened teaching and learning, expanded student and family supports to increase access and opportunity, and improved outcomes for students and families. She began her career as a science teacher in Washington Heights in New York City and later founded Esperanza Preparatory Academy, a dual language middle and high school designed to expand academic opportunity and college preparation. Throughout her career, she has focused on strengthening instruction, developing school leaders, and improving student outcomes through strategic and data-informed leadership.
Board Chair Tarece Johnson-Morgan praised Estrell’s selection as superintendent:
“Gwinnett County Public Schools is a remarkable district filled with talented students, dedicated educators, and a community that believes in the power of education. Throughout this process, the Board sought a leader whose intelligence, effectiveness, and vision match the scale and promise of this district. Dr. Estrella is a brilliant educator and an experienced superintendent who understands how to lead complex systems with clarity and purpose. Her data-centered leadership reflects the values we hold deeply in Gwinnett, including empathy, excellence, equity, and effectiveness. Her intellect, integrity, courage, and commitment to students position her to help lead Gwinnett County Public Schools forward so every child is seen, supported, and empowered to thrive.”
Estrella rose to the top of the candidate pool because of her proven results in student achievement, her ability to lead change at scale, and her strong understanding of the unique context and opportunities of the Gwinnett County Public Schools landscape.
“It has truly been a pleasure getting to know Dr. Estrella and I’ve enjoyed learning so much about her extensive background and experiences that I feel will help elevate GCPS to new heights for many years to come,” said School Board member Steve Gasper.
The candidate comes highly recommended by an impressive list of national leaders. In a letter to the Board, Miguel A. Cardona, former United States Secretary of Education said, “Gwinnett County Public Schools needs a superintendent who can honor what the district has built, confront challenges candidly, and mobilize the organization toward higher levels of achievement and opportunity for every student. Dr. Estrella is exceptionally qualified to lead that work.”
Estrella shared the following statement after learning she was named sole finalist:
“I’m honored to be considered the sole finalist for this esteemed position and to join a community so deeply committed to investing today for a better tomorrow. I strongly believe that when we focus on developing our people, including our educators, leaders, and staff, we create the conditions needed to effectively support every student. By thinking systemically, analyzing data to guide our decisions, and continuing to invest in meaningful professional development, we can expand the many opportunities already underway to help students and staff grow and succeed. Just as important, I look forward to keeping our community informed and actively involved in the decision-making process so that together we can continue building on the progress of Gwinnett schools and add even greater value to this outstanding organization.”
The Board also expresses sincere appreciation to Interim Superintendent Al Taylor for his steady leadership and continued service to Gwinnett County Public Schools during this transition.
“It has been an honor to serve the students, families, staff, Board, and community during this important time for Gwinnett County Public Schools. I appreciate the Board of Education’s thoughtful work throughout this process. Our district continues to make strong progress because of the dedication of our teachers and staff, the partnership of our families and community, and the hard work of our students. As we welcome our new superintendent, I am committed to supporting a smooth transition and am confident that the strong momentum across Team GCPS will continue as we work together to strengthen teaching and learning and keep student success at the center of everything we do,” said Taylor.
