GWINNETT COUNTY, GA– Jordan Anthony “Maniac” Moorman, 28, of Duluth has been sentenced to life for his part in the 2019 deadly armed robbery of a 62-year-old man.
Moorman, 28, of Duluth, was sentenced to life plus 10 years in prison for the shooting death of Leslie Smith. Moorman, whose history of gang-related crime dates back to his youth, was found guilty on March 13 of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, armed robbery, and violation of the Georgia Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act.
“We have zero tolerance for gang violence in Gwinnett County,” Gwinnett District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson said. “This verdict and sentence reflect our goal to end violent crime and gang activity in our county.”
On Jan. 9, 2019, the victim, Leslie Smith, traveled to Norcross to retrieve a mobile phone from one of the individuals involved in the counterfeiting enterprise. After arriving in Norcross, Smith declined to travel to the planned meeting place in an apartment complex and instead waited in the parking lot of a retail strip mall on South Norcross Tucker Road, according to investigators in the case.
Moorman arrived at the strip mall driving an SUV with co-defendant Jordan Brantley, who was found guilty of malice murder and other charges in May 2024 for shooting Smith. Brantley got out and approached Smith’s vehicle and got into the back seat. Brantley fired two shots, hitting Smith once in the back of the head, then Moorman and Brantley ran back to the SUV and fled the scene.
Aided by a witness who followed the SUV and called 911, Brantley was quickly arrested. Moorman got away and fled to Indiana. He was eventually arrested in July 2019.
Managing Assistant District Attorney Marlene Oldeen, Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Ryan Smith, and Assistant District Attorney Jared Lee prosecuted the case with the assistance of Investigators Shayla LaCosta and Germaine Johnson and Victim Witness Advocate Korinne Haskins. The Gwinnett County Medical Examiner’s Office and Gwinnett County Police Department were invaluable to prosecuting the case, the District Attorney’s Office stated.
