Less than 100 voters have participated in today’s election runoff for the Stonecrest City Council District 5 seat. As of 3:30 p.m., 98 ballots had been cast. There are 9,189 registered voters in District 5. Tammy Grimes and Dave Marcus are vying for the unexpired term of former City Councilwoman Diane Adoma. On Dec. 2, Rockdale County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a person armed call at 11:30 a.m. located at 2297 Malta Drive Conyers. Deputies arrived and found that the suspect had barricaded himself inside the home. The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office S.W.A.T was called to the scene. With assistance from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office S.W.A.T, the suspect was taken into custody without further incident. The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the incident. Updates will be provided as they become available.

The City of Stonecrest is hosting a public hearing on the city’s 2020 budget today (Monday, Dec. 2) at 6 p.m. at Stonecrest City Hall, 3120 Stonecrest Blvd., Stonecrest.The public is encouraged to attend. On Nov. 28, 2019, at approximately 7:35 p.m., a Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office inmate was discovered to be having what appeared to be a medical complication during routine headcount. The Jail Medical Staff rendered medical treatment until EMTs arrived and transported the inmate to a local hospital. After intense treatment by the hospital staff, at approximately 3:08 a.m. on November 29, 2019 the inmate succumbed to his condition and passed. The GBI was called in to handle the investigation. New Birth Missionary Baptist Church is redefining “Black Friday” with the inaugural Kwanzaa Plaza event beginning Nov. 29, at the church’s family life center, 6400 Woodrow Road, Stonecrest. The Kwanzaa Plaza will feature approximately 100 minority-owned and small businesses during a three-day event geared at highlighting local entrepreneurs and fostering commerce within the African-American community. Kwanzaa is an annual celebration of the African-American culture that is marked by week-long acknowledgment of heritage, unity, creativity, faith and cooperative economics.
