By Mackenzie N. Morgan As the flu epidemic sweeps Georgia and across the nation, DeKalb County’s Board of Health reported its first pediatric death related to the flu. Miguel Jaimes Martinez, 15, a Cross Keys High School student, died from flu complications on Sunday, Feb. 11, according to DeKalb officials. DeKalb Schools Superintendent R. DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond has selected Chuck Ellis as the county’s director of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs, effective Feb. 26. Ellis will manage the department’s 200 full- and part-time employees and a budget of $12.8 million. Owens’ accomplishment as a first-generation pilot comes during the national celebration of Black History Month. At a Feb. 8 press conference, held at Saint Philip AME Church, officials gathered to announce DeKalb’s first record restriction summit and job fair. A record restriction, formerly known as expungement, is for those who have been arrested by DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, Marshals or Police but never convicted or pled guilty. Men in DeKalb County will now have one less barrier to getting preventative health care, thanks to the DeKalb County Board of Health and health partners who have launched a new initiative. The board is opening a health and wellness clinic to provide free preventive care to low-income men who live in DeKalb. The clinic will open on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at the Board of Health’s T.O. Vinson Health Center, 440 Winn Way, Decatur. Patients will be served on Wednesday and Thursday evenings by appointment.
