Rep. Hank Johnson unveils funding proposed for DeKalb, Gwinnett transportation improvements

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman Hank Johnson, a senior member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, unveiled the list of five projects included in the Investing in a New Vision for the Environment and Surface Transportation (INVEST) in America Act.

The INVEST Act is a five-year, $547 billion surface transportation reauthorization bill that is being marked up and voted out of the Transportation Committee (T&I) this week.

Johnson’s projects will bring nearly $20 million in transportation improvements to Georgia’s Fourth Congressional District that will improve safety, equity, and help respond to the climate crisis by investing in transit and giving more Georgians a safe and convenient alternative to driving.

Members of Congress were eligible to submit projects for inclusion in the surface reauthorization bill as long as the projects were located within the member’s district, publicly disclosed, and submitted by an acceptable entity, including state and local governments, among other requirements. Members of Congress were also required to certify that they and their family members had no financial interest in any of the projects they were sponsoring.

“Transportation and mobility play a critical role in the quality of life for my constituents,” said Rep. Johnson. “I am proud to see the projects that I requested with the help from our local partners are moving forward. These projects were specifically targeted because instead of expanding highways and feeding never-ending congestion, they will improve safety and invest in equity all while helping the environment. I look forward to working to ensure these critical projects make it through the legislative process and on to the Fourth District.”

After the surface transportation bill is marked up and passed out of T&I, it goes to full House for a floor vote. If it passes the House, it then goes to the Senate for a vote, and if it passes the Senate it heads to the President’s desk for his signature before becoming law.
